5 75kg of pangolin scales seized from gang | Madurai News

Theni: Personnel from the wildlife crime control bureau (WCCB), forest department and the Theni district police arrested five people and seized 5.75kg of pangolin scales from them. The value of the seizure is estimated at several lakh rupees. An official said that pangolins that are protected under Schedule I of The Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, are hunted for misconception over their medicinal value. It is mostly exported to China. Based on a tip-off, P Sekar, 50, of Kadamalaikundu village near Andipatti in Theni was picked up for questioning. The scales were seized from him and based on information provided by him they arrested R Munusamy, S Latchumanan, V Chellapandi and K Vanaraj.

The accused have been identified as K Mahendran from MM Nagar in Ponmeni Main road and M Prakash from Chittalatchi Nagar in Mahaboobpalayam. A police officer said that they received a tip off that the duo were involved in peddling ganja. A team followed the accused and found that they had hidden ganja in a motor room in Kalaimuthu Nagar. A police team barged into the motor room on Saturday and seized the ganja hidden there. They also arrested Mahendran and Prakash from the room.

They also have been made ambassadors for slender loris, that thrive in the forest range, by SEEDS Trust. Ponnammal Educational Trust will give Rs 1 lakh to each student through through SEEDS Trust. PAWS-Bosch has been funding slender loris conservation under its CSR activity through SEEDS Trust which has been interacting with students on nature conservation. The 11 students were appointed as student ambassadors for the slender loris conservation project in the area.
