Jessica Stricklen loved drinking craft beer, but after not feeling well, soon learned that her body and gluten just couldn t get along. Not a good diagnosis for a beer lover.
While working in Portland, Oregon as the CFO of a winery, she developed a knowledge in quality craft beverages. She turned to some gluten-free brewers like Ground Breaker Brewing in Portland and Ghostfish Brewing Company in Seattle, Washington. These breweries inspired her to make gluten-free brewed beer back to Grand Rapids.

Grand Rapids has no shortage of beer for enthusiasts, but for those with a gluten allergy, it can feel like wandering through a desert with nothing to drink. Michiganâs first dedicated gluten-free brewery and facility intends to change that.
With a portfolio spanning from IPAs to lagers to barrel-aged stouts, Brewery Nyx will bring those who love beer but canât enjoy it back into the fold.
Founder Jessica Stricklen learned to love beer in Grand Rapids. She spent years honing her palate on local favorites, but after a period of feeling ill, she quickly realized she and gluten did not agree. A life without craft beer was tough for her at first, but she has figured out ways to adapt after going more than a decade gluten-free.

MiBiz reports that Jessica Stricklen plans to open Brewery Nyx, a completely gluten-free brewery, in Grand Rapids Roosevelt Park neighborhood.

Strickland tells MiBiz her focus is making great-tasting beer:
“The majority of gluten-free beers available are mostly made from sorghum grain, which leads to sort of a bitter, metallic aftertaste that we’re going to avoid.We’re making great-tasting beer. It’s a premium brand because we have premium ingredients.”

Well, aside from the many breweries and beer-related accolades Grand Rapids, Michigan boasts, there s another one to add to the list. This summer, good ol Beer City, USA will also be home to Michigan s very first, fully gluten-free brewery.
Brewery Nyx, according to MLive, will be opening as the very first brewery in Michigan dedicated to being completely gluten-free. A feat that other breweries have come close to with low or reduced-gluten beers. However, Brewery Nyx will be making sure their facility and all of their beers are truly, fully gluten-free.
