The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Mr Samuel Abu Jinapor, has asked traditional leaders to lend a hand to the country’s fight against illegal mining and deforestation.
He said there was the need for chiefs to get involved to help the government to succeed as the government desired to sanitise the mining sector and rid it of illegal mining, commonly called galamsey.
The government realized $666m out of its targeted revenue of $1.5 billion from the upstream petroleum industry for the year 2020 due to the impact of COVID-19.
The drop in the targeted revenue was also attributed to the low oil prices on the international market.
The Manager, Project Evaluation at Petroleum Commission (PC), Ebenezer Harmah, disclosed this at Sekondi on Monday, at a stakeholders’ meeting with the Western Region House of Chiefs attended by the Minister of Energy, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, and the Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs Minister, Mr. Kojo Kum.
Mr. Harmah explained that since the pandemic broke in the country in 2020, there had been a significant drop in crude oil price arising out of demand shock, increased cost of operation, impact on exploration and appraisal investments, investment attraction, and local content development.
Chieftaincy cases at the W/R House of Chiefs biggest challenge Awulae Adjaye III
May 12, 2021
The number of chieftaincy cases pending at the Western Region House of Chiefs stand at 61, the Acting President of the House, Awulae Annor Adjaye III, has revealed, stressing that the rising trend is regrettable and the ‘biggest challenge.’
Out of the number, 42 cases are petitions with 19 standing as appeal cases. However, with the new administrative set up in Ghana, the National House of Chiefs at an emergency meeting on April 1, has directed that 22 of cases should been transferred to the Western North Region.
Awulae Annor Adjaye III, disclosed these at a stakeholders’ consultative meeting with the Minister of Energy, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh and the Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs Minister, Ebenezer Kojo Kum, at Sekondi, on Monday.
The Western Regional Minister, Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah, has received his baptism of fire since he assumed office as President Akufo-Addo’s representative in the region.
What started as a meeting to welcome Mr Kojo Kum, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs Minister, and Dr Mathew Opoku Prempeh, Energy Minister, to the Regional House of Chiefs on Monday, turned into fireworks when one of the Paramount chiefs decided to put him on the spot.
The Paramount Chief of Nsein Traditional Area, Awulae Agyefi Kwame, noted for his forthrightness, was uncharitable when he looked into the face of Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah and told him, without mincing words, that he was unhappy with his conduct as Regional Minister, and that he had also performed abysmally as the government’s representative for the region in the discharge of his duties.
