Eyes on Milwaukee: Big Property Owners Gear Up To Sue City

Record challenges to 2020 assessments now headed to court. By Jeramey Jannene - Mar 15th, 2021 07:20 pm //end headline wrapper ?>BMO Tower at 790 N. Water St. Photo by Jeramey Jannene. Milwaukee’s 2020 assessment process generated a record number of appeals. So many that the city suspended the process for 2021. Almost a year later, a record dollar value of challenges remains. The Common Council’s Judiciary & Legislation Committee recommended Monday to allow 94 unresolved claims, representing $876 million in city-assessed value, to go to court. The city received 5,592 appeals in 2020. The overwhelming majority of claims came from single-family homeowners representing themselves and arguing over changes that would result in a property tax bill changing by a few hundred dollars. The Assessor’s Office and Board of Review resolved those claims, either adjusting the assessed values or denying the claim.

The CDA selected Mandel’s proposal for the site over three others in February. Before acquiring the property and starting construction, Mandel will need to negotiate terms of the sale with the CDA. The term sheet and rezoning will need approval from various city bodies, including the Common Council. A preliminary development schedule anticipates a December groundbreaking, with an 18-month construction schedule. Developer: Mandel Group Inc.

Elm Grove village board candidates talk School Sisters project plans

Voters in the tight-knit community of Elm Grove will head to the polls April 6, to elect three village trustees.  Six candidates, including two incumbents, are vying for the three open seats. Trustee Kim Irwin is not seeking re-election. The winners will each serve two-year terms on the village board. Elm Grove has seen from 13% to 58% voter turnout in the spring election in recent years. This year, voters will also cast ballots for village president, which may encourage stronger turnout. Village President Neil Palmer faces challenger Mary Inden.  Many village trustee candidates touted Elm Grove s strong sense of community and shared thoughts on how to keep the village a great place to live. A 2020 list said Elm Grove was the best place to live in the state.

The $33 million, 120-bed behavioral health hospital, which will be owned and operated by Universal Health Services, will be located at 1706 S. 68th St. in West Allis. The global pandemic has affected all areas of our lives. In the construction industry, projects have been delayed or even canceled. But a number of developments still plan to open in 2021. Now News Group selected eight developments in the Milwaukee suburbs that are scheduled to be completed this year. The projects highlight the variety of development happening throughout suburban Milwaukee: apartments, condominiums, a hotel, hospitals. The list is not comprehensive.
