The real problem is the absence of hope among Palestinians

The real problem is the absence of hope among Palestinians Sir John Jenkins May 14, 2021 23:34 Israeli border police scuffle on May 14, 2021 with protesters in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood of east Jerusalem, where several Palestinian families are under imminent threat of forcible eviction from their homes. (AP Photo/ Mahmoud Illean) Short Url https://arab.news/nhjsj It is a disturbing film clip, taken on a mobile phone, young protesters running down a darkened street, illuminated by the flames of burning buildings, shouts, screams, gunfire in the background. No, it was not last Monday in Jerusalem, Lod, Jaffa or Gaza. It was Karbala, in central Iraq, on Sunday. The protests had been sparked by the latest assassination of a young activist by shadowy gunmen, almost certainly backed by Iran. The protesters wanted what they have always wanted: Freedom from fear, freedom from Tehran’s baleful influence, freedom to live their lives in dignity and hope. They set fire to the Irani

But this did not happen overnight nor did the origin of the chaos happen this past week. Moreover, some people receive their news from only one outlet (MSNBC, Fox News, CNN, etc), which leads to a univocal point of view. And far more troubling, there is a vast population who receives their news from social media, and often only by way of headlines or unmoderated comments.

Yom Hashoah 2021

An artificial date; no date would suffice. Every day is Yom HaShoah. It went on for years. No matter how many times, how many stories, in person and in media, there is nothing but head shaking, grief, sorrow, and radical awareness that there is nothing so awful it can’t happen. This was a political system, and a religious system. Yes. The eminent Shoah historian, Saul Friedlaender, aptly discusses the Nazis’ “redemptive antisemitism,” distinct from other versions. It was a mystical, religious system; a form of fundamentalism. My goal here, and today of all days, is not to study them but to learn from the dangers inherent in certain kinds of thinking and types of organization parties, governments that come from that.

Crossing borders in a Kombi van

Crossing borders in a Kombi van     The border-obsessed times we live in reminded me of some really tough borders I encountered in years past. It is October 1961, the place: rural Turkey. Where you would have expected to roll on down the deserted dusty road, there is a boom gate and four sentries. This can t be a border, however. We had already experienced the grim realities of a Middle East border in our attempt to cross from Israel into Jordan through the Mandelbaum Gate. Despite our special ‘clean’ Australian passports, supplied by the Australian Embassy in Tel Aviv and devoid of any Israeli stamps, our trepidation as we approached the crossing was acute and intensified by the sudden bursts of gunfire on both sides of the gateway. We U-turned sharply and retreated and so ended our drive to Baghdad.
