Protests against fuel price hike across Punjab

1180 Patiala/Bathinda, July 8 On a call given by the Samyukt Kisan Morcha, farmers held protests against the central government over the hike in the prices of petrol, diesel and gas cylinders across the state on Thursday. Carrying gas cylinders on their shoulders with banners of farm unions in their hands, the protesters gathered at Samana, Patran, Patiala (urban), Patiala (rural), Nabha and Sanaur in Patiala district against the hike in prices. A farmer said, “We have gathered outside the office of the district administrative complex in Patiala in protest against excessive hike in the prices of commodities. Late on Monday evening, Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) extended the power restrictions and asked the large-scale industries in Punjab using more than 100 KW of load in central, north, and west zones to shut down for another three days till July 10 as the state is facing power shortage. The continuous supply industry has also been asked to use just 50% of the sanctioned load from July 8 to July 18. This is necessary to maintain 8-hour supply to the agriculture sector.

Consequently, the industry in several areas, shut down for two days, will be allowed to operate only partially from Monday. Already, one unit of the plant (660 MW) has remained shut for some time due to a technical glitch. A senior official at the plant said there was a technical glitch in unit No. 1 and it would be fixed soon. The official added work was on to put back the second unit into operation at the earliest.
