Merli Albizures gripped a megaphone in late April, looked at the 80-plus people in front of her at Biancini Park in Bell, and felt a jolt of déjà vu.
In 2010, she had joined other residents in the small, working-class town to revolt against officials and politicians that bled city coffers dry. There were rallies and speeches and a recall that ousted most of the City Council and brought stability and a sense of hope for better days.
The scandal inspired community activists nationwide to feel that they, too, had a chance to take down entrenched politicos. Albizures remains proud of what she and her neighbors did back then which was why she joined them on a windy afternoon to do it all over again.

Families invited to attend STEM Academy informational meeting Thursday
LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) - School staff members at Combre-Fondel Elementary School are gearing up for registration to begin by inviting families interested in having their student or students attend the new STEM Academy to attend a parent informational meeting this week.
Parents can attend the meeting in-person or virtually via Zoom.
The in-person meeting will be at the Combre-Fondel Elementary multi-purpose room on Thursday, March 18, 2021, at 5:30 p.m.
Parents can also attend a virtual meeting via this Zoom link HERE at 12 p.m. on the same day.
The Northside STEM Academy will serve any student entering grades kindergarten through fifth who are zoned to attend Barbe, Bell City, Iowa, LaGrange, Sam Houston, and Washington-Marion High Schools.
