Coming next week to Plimoth Cinema is “Limbo,” a BAFTA (the British Oscars) nominee for best British picture and best debut. Writer-director Ben Sharrock deftly crafts a humorous and poignant story of what happens to immigrants who’ve fled their war-torn homeland in search of a better life in a new land.
“Limbo” centers on Omar, a promising young Syrian musician (Amir El-Masry) stuck on a remote, wind-whipped Scottish island awaiting the results of his asylum claim. Omar is tethered to his oud – a lute-like stringed instrument – but never plays it because it doesn’t sound the same as it did at home.
Braintree turns up on Last Week Tonight with John Oliver
A Braintree nursing home made a cameo appearance in the latest episode of “Last Week Tonight,” John Oliver’s late-night Sunday satirical news series.
During the main segment of his April 11 show, Oliver takes down the strained industry behind nursing homes and assisted living facilities, explaining why long-term care needs fixing.
To illustrate his point, Oliver plays a WCVB Channel 5 news clip from June 2020 that features a woman living at Braintree Manor HealthCare at 1102 Washington St. She talks about being so neglected and desperate as she lay helpless in bed that she called the Braintree police for help.
Promising excitement, access and helpful hints for aspiring entrepreneurs, Wahlberg wants to welcome said “fans” into his personal life through the auspices of a flummoxed film crew chronicling his ability to balance acting with his portfolio of side businesses, ranging from Municipal apparel and F-45 fitness studios to his entertainment production company, Unrealistic Ideas (makers of “Wahl Street”), and his admittedly faltering Wahlburgers franchises. And to add to this shameless self-promotion, he exploits his wife, Rhea, and their kids by dragging them along on his misguided ego trip.
Perhaps I’m being harsh because after living one full year under lock and key at my meager newspaperman digs, I take offense when a multi-milli
The movie stars Boston actor Ben Affleck, Tye Sheridan (“Ready Player One”) and Lily Rabe (“American Horror Story”).
Dorchester native and UMass Amherst grad William Monahan wrote the screenplay. He also scripted Martin Scorsese’s crime drama “The Departed,” which was filmed in Boston and Quincy. The 2006 Oscar-winning movie starred Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon and Jack Nicholson. The Tender Bar is a reunion for Affleck and Clooney, who worked together as producers on “Argo,” which won the Oscar for best picture in 2013.
Filming for “The Tender Bar” started in February and is expected to last through mid-April. The movie is being made at various locations in Massachusetts, including Beverly, Worcester, Fitchburg, Ashby, Watertown and Lowell.
