An inmate on hunger strike at the Drumheller Institution says conditions have worsened amid the month-long lockdown at the unit where he’s incarcerated, despite few active COVID-19 cases remaining at the prison.
For the 30th consecutive day, the movements of inmates on Unit 9 of the medium-security federal prison remained heavily restricted on Wednesday, with no clarity on when the lockdown could end. Those incarcerated are allowed out of their cells for less than one hour each day and without regular access to the prison’s canteen, where they normally purchase food and hygiene products with their own money on top of provided meals.
