Projects suspended as hackers breach Nairobi building approval system

Projects suspended as hackers breach Nairobi building approval system Thursday June 10 2021 By COLLINS OMULO Hundreds of construction sector jobs and multibillion-shilling property investments have been frozen after hackers breached the Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) online application system, forcing a suspension of development plan approvals. Hackers gained access to the system’s Quick Response (QR) code and effected numerous illegal approvals, prompting officials to shut it down. The QR system is part of the e-construction development plans application system used for seeking building plans and construction permits. The system provides unique electronic identification of all approved architectural and structural plans, eliminating the need for property developers to submit hard copies of development plans for physical stamping as a mark of final approval.

KNH to serve referral patients only from July

KNH to serve referral patients only from July Wednesday May 12 2021 By COLLINS OMULO Top referral Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) will close its doors to walk-in patients starting this July as part of decongestion of the facility, Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) Director-General Mohamed Badi has said. The new development, he said, will allow the country’s biggest hospital to concentrate on referral cases only. The NMS boss said the move is part of a wider plan by the Ministry of Health to have referral hospitals across the country serve what they have been specifically established for. “In conjunction with the Ministry of Health, we have been able to produce a policy document on referral system in Kenya. Nairobi County will be used as a guinea pig as the first county to implement this strategy to ensure that KNH becomes a teaching and referral hospital only,” said Maj-Gen Badi on Wednesday.

Cartels thrive in filth and confusion, just like roddents

THE STANDARD OPINION You don’t have to gun down or jail brokers and cartels. [Courtesy] In the 1990s, I was a frequent user of Machakos Bus Station. Each visit filled me with trepidation. The place was a war zone. Battle-scarred and toothless goons, high on weed and poor upbringing, would espy a potential passenger from 100 metres away and charge in their direction yelping like dogs on heat. One would seize you by the leg, another by the scruff of the neck, and frog-march you to a bus that appeared nearly full, but whose ‘passengers’ were idlers paid to idle. In the process, you would be separated from your luggage, spouse, children and wallet – sometimes for good.
