Mankato School Board approves project near Prairie Winds Middle School, shifts start date for fall

MANKATO, Minn. (KEYC) A project approved by the Mankato Area Public School Board hopes to reduce congestion near Prairie Winds Middle School.
It’s one of three projects totaling around $411,000 approved at Monday’s meeting.
Other approved projects include repairs to the storm sewer at Mankato West High School and playground improvements at Bridges Community School.
At Prairie Winds, crews will be constructing a new entrance drive to provide additional storage for vehicles during student drop-off and pick-up times.

MANKATO, Minn. (KEYC) The Mankato School Board approved $7.5 million in budget cuts to offset the projected deficit next school year.
In an effort to break even,100 staff positions will be cut from the district.
The Mankato School Board unanimously approved the budget reduction on Monday.
This comes after a loss of revenue after COVID-19 prompted about 350 students to choose not to enroll with the district.
“For school districts, as enrollment increases, you typically increase staffing; as it decreases, you decrease staffing, and that’s part of the circumstance we are in,” explained Tom Sager, director of business services at Mankato Area Public Schools.

Mary McGaw grew up in a Republican home on the rural prairie of south central Minnesota. But as she moved from her tiny town of Amboy to the nearest city of Mankato to study nursing, her politics migrated too.
McGaw was moved by the plight of underinsured and became concerned about the viability of safety programs. She cast her vote for Democrat Joe Biden in November, and nearly three months later, she is pleased with how hard the new president is fighting for his priorities.

McGaw’s transformation is driving Democrats’ hopes as they charge into what the party considers its new frontier: small-city America.
As Democrats continue to lose votes in small towns, they’ve seen clear gains in regional hubs that dot stretches of rural America. Biden carried roughly 60 counties President Donald Trump won in 2016, many were places anchored by a midsize or small city that is trending Democratic. They include places like Grand Rapids, Michigan; Wilmington, North Carolina; Dayton, Ohio and Mankato‘s Blue Earth County.
Their similarities are striking: Most include universities or, like Mankato, large medical centers that draw educated and racially diverse newcomers. Their economies are better than average. And in 2020, their voters showed a bipartisan streak - voting for Biden for president and Republicans down-ballot in large numbers.
