MYSURU: With pressure on hospitals mounting with the rise in cases and medical resources such as beds and oxygen scarce, elected representatives are increasingly engaging in petty turf wars, putting people’s lives at risk.
On Friday, Pratap Simha, Mysuru MP, stopped just short of accusing district ministers of Chamarajanagar and Mandya of indulging in goondaism after KC Narayanagowda, Mandya district minister, travelled to Mysuru with police in tow to get oxygen cylinders for his district on Wednesday. His Chamarajanagar counterpart S Suresh Kumar had also visited suppliers in Mysuru on Thursday.

As many as 35 people have died of COVID-19 infection in Shivamogga district in the last seven days (from April 26 to March 2). The highest ever 12 deaths were reported in the district on Sunday. So far 398 people have succumbed to the infection. As of Sunday, 3,170 were under treatment and among them, 2,325 are in home isolation.
Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister K.S. Eshwarappa, who is in charge of the district, reviewed the situation at McGann Hospital in Shivamogga on Monday. He expressed shock over the increase in the number of deaths in the recent days. He wanted to know the reasons for this. As on April 26, there was only one death in the district. Gradually the number went up.

A 32-year old youth, whose marriage was scheduled for Thursday, died of COVID-19 in Shivamogga on Wednesday.
D.M. Pruthviraj, a native of Devarakudige in Koppa taluk of Chikkamagaluru district, was working in a private company in Bengaluru.
He had come to his native place 10 days ago for marriage preparations. After he tested positive, he isolated himself at home. As his condition deteriorated, he was shifted to McGann Hospital in Shivamogga. He succumbed to the infection.

District Health Officer Dr Rajesh Suragihalli told TNIE that the man tested positive for the South African variant of the virus on Wednesday.
“The test samples were collected when he landed in India 18 days ago. He didn’t show any symptoms,” he said.
Owner-driver of vehicle transporting cattle severely injured in attack
The Sringeri police have registered a case against the driver-cum-owner of a canter truck on charges of transporting cattle with no safety measures under the new Ordinance promulgated by the State government banning cow slaughter. This is said to be the first case in the State after the Karnataka Prevention of Slaughter and Preservation of Cattle Ordinance, 2020, was promulgated.
Abid Ali was allegedly transporting 12 to 15 head of cattle in his truck from Ranebennur to Mangaluru. He was beaten up by a group of unknown people near Tanikodu in Sringeri taluk in the early hours of January 8. The attackers beat him up severely and took away his cash.
