CHENNAI: It’s normal for new political parties to spring up ahead of elections. But what’s interesting is that people entering politics are picking names of parties that are not new.
For instance, Ra Arjunamurthy, who was earlier chief coordinator of actor Rajinikanth’s to-be-launched party, recently floated a new party - India Makkal Munnetra Katchi. You probably hadn’t heard the name before, but the party was registered in 2019, with its headquarters in Erode.
“It was registered by someone else, and I made myself a part of it, in accordance with the Election Commission’s (EC) norms,” Arjunamurthy said. More than 100 registered parties that haven’t contested elections, have apparently offered their names to newcomers.

On December 29 last year, Rajinikanth, citing his health condition vis-a-vis the coronavirus pandemic announced that he would not join politics. He had undergone renal transplant in 2016 and is on immuno-suppressants.
The statement was issued after reports emerged that some district chiefs of the Rajinikanth s outfit joined DMK, Tamil Nadu s main opposition party, on Sunday.

Three weeks after superstar Rajinikanth announced his decision to not venture into politics, calling his recent health scare “a warning from God”, his team has come forward to say that members of Rajini Makkal Mandram are free to resign and join other parties.
NEW DELHI: Actor Rajinikanth had declared on December 10 that he would make the name of his political party public in January. However, just a day after getting discharged from a hospital in Hyderabad, Rajinikanth announced on Tuesday that he would not launch a political party.
Rajinikanth has shown indecisiveness by going back on his words within three weeks.
This is not just the first time that the actor has displayed ambivalence or done volte face over taking a serious political plunge.

It was for the first time on December 31, 2017 that he announced that he would launch a political party. He also said his party would contest all the 234 assembly seats in Tamil Nadu.

Chennai: Kamal Haasan s Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) has approached Election Commission (EC) over the allotment of Battery Torch symbol to MGR Makkal Katchi for 2021 Tamil Nadu elections. The actor-turned politician s party was denied the symbol without any specific explanation from the Election Commission. MGR Makkal Katchi will be using the symbol in all the 234 constituencies in Tamil Nadu. Interestingly, MNM has been given torch as a symbol in Puducherry.
