Call for budget to address perfect storm housing crisis

Premium Content Subscriber only Queensland’s housing crisis will continue for years unless there is significant investment in the state budget to address it, LNP housing spokesman Tim Mander has warned. Mr Mander said regions across Queensland, such as Mackay, were in the grips of a housing shortage because of a “perfect storm” of several factors. “We’ve had tens of thousands of people arrive back from overseas, we’ve got interstate migration, we’ve got low interest rates and we’ve got home buyer incentives,” he said. “We’ve had relatively little investment in social housing.” Whitsunday MP Amanda Camm said department of housing figures showed there were currently 886 applications for social housing across Mackay Whitsunday – with 67 per cent of these classified as very high need.

Mayor in talks on possible Mackay Whitsunday quarantine hub

Premium Content Subscriber only Mayor Greg Williamson is in talks about a potential quarantine hub in the Mackay Whitsunday region to deliver desperately needed fruit pickers from overseas to work on farms. Cr Williamson held a meeting with Whitsunday, Townsville and Cairns mayors on Monday to discuss the issue, with talks ongoing. “All of the mayors – Whitsunday, Townsville and Cairns – we’re all concerned about making sure that we have enough facilities available, particularly in North Queensland, to get us through this hump,” he said. “Because tomatoes, capsicum – all those things will be very expensive if we can’t get them off the fields.”
