Nagpur: Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh and his wife on Sunday performed the Kanyadaan ritual of a 23-year-old speech and hearing impaired woman, who is an orphan, during her marriage with a 27-year-old man.
Nagpur district collector Ravindra Thakre and his wife performed the father s duty for the groom, who is also an orphan with speech and hearing disabilities, an official release said. The marriage was held at Nagpur, with many political leaders and government officials in attendance.

Mumbai: Uddhav Thackeray led Maharashtra government recently unveiled ‘Shakti Act’ to curb crimes against women and children. Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government approved the Shakti Bill which is expected to be tabled during the winter session. The Shakti Act is modelled on the lines of Andhra Pradesh Disha Act Criminal Law (AP Amendment) Act, 2019 with a provision of the death penalty for rape.
Several organisations, women s rights lawyers, activists, academicians, legal professionals have requested the MVA government to not table the Shakti Act because it is draconian, misplaced, protectionist, and not progressive.

NEW DELHI: Virtually ruling out repealing of new farm laws, the government on Thursday asked farmer groups to consider its proposals for amending the Acts to address their concerns and said it is open to discussing its offer further whenever the unions want, but protesters remained defiant and threatened to block railway tracks too in addition to highways.
