Over the last few days, Montana State University in Bozeman, University of Montana and Montana State University-Billings each dropped their mask requirements. The three universities are now recommending unvaccinated people wear masks.
Commissioner of Higher Education Clayton Christian issued a memo last week removing the system wide mask requirement. The decision comes days after the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced fully vaccinated people can go without masks or physically distance in most situations.
Paula Short, a spokeswoman at UM, says there’s a lot of optimism going into the summer and looking to the fall school term.

“Microorganisms are the most diverse and abundant form of life on Earth, and we just know 1 percent of them,” says Valerie De Anda, an environmental microbiologist at the University of Texas at Austin. “Our information is biased toward the organisms that affect humans. But there are a lot of organisms that drive the main chemical cycles on Earth that we just don’t know.”

His work infuses experiences from his childhood in Eastern Montana, including his love of Major League Baseball, and the history of Native assimilation into white culture, as well as teachings from his father. His father, Al Chandler, grew up on an Indian Residential School near Pierre, South Dakota, and was later the focus of a 1983 PBS documentary short called I d Rather Be Powwowing.
