Calumet Montana Refining in Great Falls says it will spend nearly $200 million to convert some of its crude oil output into renewable diesel fuel processing, with plans to integrate local farms and ranches and produce 10,000 barrels of the new feedstock product per day starting in 2022.
A feedstock is renewable, biological material that can be used as a fuel, or converted to another form of fuel or energy product. Experts say that over time it will replace fossil-origin sources, such as oil, gas and coal, as fuel, according to sciencedirect.com.
The company says the renewable processing will begin next year with a soybean oil feedstock. The production will equate to 140 million gallons a year.

Calumet Montana Refining will be executing a plantwide evacuation test drill exercise twice on April 12 and wants to let community members know in advance to assure them that there is no emergency, per a press release.
The Indianapolis-based company processes crude oil and produces fuel products including gasoline, diesel and jet fuel. The refinery is located at 1900 10th Street NE. The first evacuation test drill will be at 12 p.m. and the second drill at 7:30 p.m. and will involve a whistle that will blast for 20 seconds.
This is part of Calumet’s planned unit shutdown and maintenance activities will begin on April 5 and are expected to last three weeks. The shutdown and startup activities will cause periods of flaring, and folks can expect increased traffic, especially noticeable around 6 a.m. and 6 p.m., on Smelter Avenue near the former Westgate Mall property.
