Finalise draft packaging regulations within 3 months, NGT directs FSSAI ANI | Updated: Jan 13, 2021 19:16 IST
New Delhi [India], January 13 (ANI): The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) to finalize the draft Food Safety and Standards (Packaging) Amendment Regulations, 2020 within three months.
The green panel also directed the concerned authorities to consider the issue of the use of plastic bottles and multi-layered plastic packages for packaging of carbonated soft drinks, liquor and other items.
The draft Food Safety and Standards (Packaging) Amendment Regulations, 2020 relates to Specific Migration Limits of Antinomy and Phthalic acid, Bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) and packaging of drinking water.
Due to the outbreak of the Coronavirus and the subsequent lockdowns preparations to reduce the trans fat became the second priority, hence the plans to reduce trans fat got delayed, the industry is known to have told the authority.

However, recently the substance has been under the scrutiny of food safety officials, for the spice producers have been using sulphur rampantly to fumigate it, so that it can be preserved for a longer period.
This has earned the wrath of health officials who raided multiple locations recently, resulting in its seizure in few places. Although it has been a year since the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) prohibited the use of sulphur in fumigation, the practice continues unabated among the traders.
