Support centres across Japan have reported a surge in inquiries from people facing poverty, apparently stemming from the Covid-19 pandemic, with the death from starvation of an elderly woman and her daughter in an Osaka flat suggesting the problem is becoming increasingly acute.
The Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare reported this week that there were 391,717 consultations at centres across Japan between April to September, more than three times the number reported in the same period last year.
