The newly constituted Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) in Assam is yet to start functioning in full swing a week after its formation on Monday as elected members from the ruling alliance of the BJP, the UPPL and GSP are away on “sightseeing” and a high court ruling on the validity of the council is expected Tuesday.
GUWAHATI: A day after the Gauhati High Court ordered “status quo” on the formation of the new executive council of the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) after hearing a challenge petition filed by former chief executive member (CEM) and BPF leader Hagrama Mohilary, the party on Saturday announced that it has decided to sit in the opposition.
The court will be hearing the matter again on December 22, but BPF general secretary, Prabin Boro, said, “BPF has decided that it will sit in the opposition and will take part in the council as an active opposition in the greater interest of the people of Bodoland Territorial Region.”

GUWAHATI: The Gauhati High Court on Friday ordered “status quo” on the formation of the new executive council of Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) after hearing a challenge petition filed by former chief executive member (CEM) of the council, Hagrama Mohilary, and other elected members of Bodoland People’s Front (BPF). The court will hear the matter again on December 22.
“The petition challenged the manner in which the chief executive member, deputy chief executive member and other executives were appointed to form the council in violation of constitutional provisions. The court heard us as well as the government advocate and has ordered status quo. The next date of hearing is on December 22,” Mohilary’s counsel said. The case was heard by Justice Suman Shyam.

Guwahati: In a major development that might act as a legal spanner for the just-formed Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC), a bench of the Gauhati High Court has asked BTC (formed just three days ago) to maintain status quo. This was in response to a writ petition filed by former BTC Chief Executive Member and BPF chief Hagrama Mohilary. The petition has stated that the Chief Executive Member and other elected members have been appointed in violation of Constitutional provisions.

BJP and United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL), supported by Gana Suraksha Party (GSP), formed the government of council on Tuesday. Lone congress MLA left the party and joined BJP. Elections to 40 member councils were held in two phases on December 7 and 10. The elections have resulted in fractured mandate with the ruling Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) winning only 17 seats.
