A University of Texas at Arlington civil engineer is helping develop statewide guidance for an early warning system for floods, as well as a flood information and response system for the city of Houston.
Nick Fang, associate professor in the Civil Engineering Department, is using a $250,000 Texas Water Development Board (TWDB) grant to develop an effective guidance manual for a specific early warning system tailored for communities in Texas.
Flood Early Warning Systems (FEWS) have become more popular among flood-prone communities in Texas because of their ability to monitor rainfall and river levels, provide real-time flood forecasting and estimate potential damages They also cost less than infrastructure-related mitigation solutions.

Whether your doggos are just starting to dip their paws in or live to make a splash,
Joasis Dog Swimming & Dock Diving brings the puppy pool party to the GOOF. Created by Jo Dunham in March 2020, the backyard-pool-turned-social-swim-club setup welcomes dog siblings and friends for hour-long sessions of water-based play or instruction. Dunhamâs canine dock diving training earned her golden retrievers Goose and Dr. Watson (and 14-year-old human son, Jaxon) national rankings in the fun and friendly sport. If fetching and retrieving arenât exactly your dogâs speed, there are other options. With lifejackets always available, they are free to choose between a casual swim or soaking up some sun lounging on the grass and large pool steps.Â
Neel-Schaffer, Inc., has announced that David Migl, PE, has joined the firm as a Water Resources Engineer.
Based in the Houston office, Migl has nearly 10 years of experience as a Project Manager and Engineer. He has extensive experience working with Harris County to improve drainage and road conditions. He has worked with the county to identify and maintain design flow capacity for channels and has inspected large-scale channels and bayous across Houston such as White Oak Bayou, Vince Bayou, Little Vince Bayou, Sims Bayou, Greens Bayou, Vogel Creek, and Brays Bayou for deficiencies.
Migl is a Registered Professional Engineer in Texas. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Texas Tech University.
“There has to be community involvement to make sure it stays clean,” said Brawnwen Ranck, director of philanthropy and engagement with the Bayou Preservation Association.
The event comes ahead of the future installation of a segment of trail from Stella Link Road to South Rice Avenue, which is under review and planned for sometime in 2022, according to the Houston Parks Board, the group managing the project. It is part of the board’s $220 million Bayou Greenways 2020 project, a public-private partnership that has been building out 150 miles of new trails and 3,000 acres of green space across the city.
The Meyer detention basin will include a new pedestrian bridge over Willow Waterhole, along with the trail, which will utilize the existing drainage weir just south of Brays Bayou that will stretch all the way under Loop 610 to South Rice Avenue for that portion of the project.
