Meeting scheduled to discuss natural disasters

MACOMB The McDonough County Emergency Services and Disaster Assistance Agency has scheduled a multi-hazards mitigation planning committee meeting for Wednesday, May 19 at 2 p.m. in the ESDA operations center at 740 West University Drive on the campus of Western Illinois University. ESDA Director Edgar Rodriguez said this week that this will be the second time the committee has come together to voice opinions on the mitigation of natural hazards. The frequency and damages caused by severe storms and other natural hazards in the county will be discussed, Rodriguez said. Zachary Krug of the American Environmental Corporation in Springfield is serving as the committee consultant.
ONTARIO
Members of the Ontario FFA Chapter, which is part of the Snake River FFA District, have placed first, second or third in every contest except one within the district this year, according to information received from FFA leaders at the Ontario High School. The accomplishment is notable, as the district grew from six schools in 2019-20 to 11 in the 2020-21 school year.
Other schools in the district include Adrian, Burns, Dayville, Harper, Grant Union, Jordan Valley, Nyssa, Prairie City, Vale and Crane.
State finals
Some of the students who made it to state earned proficiency awards, and as such will go on to compete at nationals. This includes Adriana Farias, 1. Agricultural Communications; Eddie Rodriguez, 6. Agricultural Processing; Lance Trees, 7. Agricultural Sales â Entrepreneurship; and Kara Matsumura, 44.Veterinary Science.

UPDATE (4/18/21 @ 8:30 p.m.): The Buffalo Volunteer Fire Department said in a Facebook post that crews made a thorough pass on the fire line Sunday and sprayed down smoldering areas before turning land back over to property owners.
The fire was 1,990 acres with a 15.5 mile fire line. No injuries were reported and no structures lost.

BUFFALO, S.D. – Fire crews from a wide area were battling a wildfire in Harding County Saturday.
The fire was located southeast of Buffalo and as of Saturday night, was estimated to have burned six to seven miles long and one mile wide.
The fire is burning on multiple private ranch units, and terrain – including multiple creek crossings – which was making it difficult for fire crews to work around.
In a Facebook post Saturday night, Harding County officials say they have the fire fully contained, but mop up work was continuing.
