Farmhouse cheese has really been the key foodstuff which allowed us here in Ireland to compete on the vibrant international artisan food scene on a concerted basis over the last 40 years or so, writes

Medals and acclaim have abounded at international cheese competitions for many of our homegrown producers such as stalwarts Cashel Blue and Cooleeney from Tipperary, Milleens, Durrus and Gubbeen from West Cork and so many more.
Th butcher: In 1892, having received a bad cut of meat from a local butcher, Callaghan McCarthy put away his dough hook and opened the now-legendary McCarthy s of Kanturk. His descendants, the ebullient Jack McCarthy and his son Tim - the fifth-generation butcher in situ - are as enterprising as their antecedent. Standing at the front door of our shop on Main Street, Kanturk, at the height of the first Covid lockdown, it hit me that no other door was open or trading on our street. Two lockdowns later, we re in the same position. Footfall has fallen dramatically. A decade of hard work carving out a niche within the food service trade with our breakfast products was closed en masse. We were hit hard, says Jack.

Saturday promises to be a big day for the Kilkenny senior camogie team as they chase All-Ireland glory.
The Cats will take on defending champions Galway in the race for the O Duffy Cup. Although the coronavirus means supporters can t attend the game, the action from Croke Park will be broadcast live on RTÉ 2 (throw-in 7pm).
