TWO Young Enterprise companies from Brae High School which have a focus on the environment will be hoping for success after reaching the national Young Enterprise Scotland finals.
Shetland Shoormal and Affcuttins, who are both made up of S6 students, are among 17 regional finalists who will proceed to the national finals on 1 June.

Shetland Shoormal aims to reduce plastic pollution and protect the coastal environment, and the group has produced canvas bags that are widely available in local shops.
Affcuttins is a small business, incorporating environmentally-friendly materials into their products.
The group has designed and manufactured garden plant markers made from recycled slates, which are also sold locally.

TWO Shetland councillors who stood in the Scottish Parliament by-election in 2019 say they have no intention of putting themselves forward for the upcoming vote in May.
Independent candidate Ryan Thomson gained nearly 11 per cent of the vote in the August 2019, or 1,286 votes, coming third behind Liberal Democrat winner Beatrice Wishart and the SNP’s Tom Wills.

He said he wants to focus on his council duties instead of running again for MSP in the 6 May election.
The North Isles member said his experience in the by-election was “nothing but positive”.
“Because of personal circumstances at the time I couldn’t do as much canvassing as I would have liked, but it got me speaking to a lot of people who I wouldn’t ordinarily have met, and listened to a broad range of opinions, which I think is very important,” he said.

LEAVITTSBURG A new display area is set up at LaBrae schools to recognize the various achievements and accomplishments of the graduates who have been, or will be, inducted into a hall of fame.
Superintendent Anthony Calderone said the display at the high school includes a large wall with the district Viking mascot and reads: “Tradition of Excellence: LaBrae Hall of Fame”
The display adjacent to the high school gym is a combination of an interactive digital display and a wall display listing classes dating back to the original 2009 induction.
Calderone said the interactive multimedia content will sync to the LaBrae schools’ website.
