The former Rio Tinto executive portrayed as blowing the whistle on the minerâs Mozambique coal scandal felt he encountered âobfuscationâ when he raised evidence in 2012 that the division was worth much less than its official carrying value.
Emails written by Rioâs former Technology and Innovation boss Preston Chiaro were submitted to a US court as part of a fraud claim against the company.

They reveal Mr Chiaro felt a November 2012 phone call to raise valuation concerns with former chief financial officer Guy Elliott and controller Dan Larsen had not been âconstructiveâ.
