A team of scientists from Makerere University who developed the anti-tick vaccine called ticvac-u have been unveiled.
Dr Margaret Saimo-Kahwa, the lead developer of the vaccine, on Tuesday said the development started in 2005 with a seed grant from the Dutch Research Council, but the government of Uganda through the Presidential Initiative on Science and Technology took interest and continued providing financial support to date.

In the World Bank’s Science, Technology and Skills for Africa’s Report of March 2014 on improving the quality of engineering education and training in Africa, it was keenly noted that sub-Saharan Africa seriously lacks engineering capacity and relies heavily on imported expertise for two reasons insufficient output from training institutions, and poor quality education and lack of practical experience among graduates. Yet Africa also has pressing development needs that require engineers.

As a Primary Three Pupil at St. Clement Primary School, Ntusi in Sembablule District, Betty Kivumbi Nannyonga survived being another child broken by bullying. Her classmates laughed at her and made fun of the way she spoke English. “I had problems with pronouncing some words and people laughed at me,” she recalls.
