Fire claims Deer Isle workshop
DEER ISLE
Fire claimed a workshop on the North Deer Isle Road early Monday morning, according to Deer Isle Fire Chief Brent Morey.
The Maine Fire Marshal’s Office has determined that the fire started with a “clamp light,” the chief said. A clamp light is a lamp that attaches with a spring clamp. Morey said those lights are dangerous.
The homeowner, Josh Clough, lost a lot of equipment, including numerous coils of new rope, Morey said. “He lost a lot of gear. He lost a lot of traps.”
Firefighters were on scene for six hours. They were called to the scene at 6:20 a.m. and left around 12:30 p.m.
Motorist injured in crash on bridge
DEER ISLE A motorist was injured and taken to a local hospital after a single-vehicle crash on the Deer Isle-Sedgwick Bridge Wednesday morning, according to authorities.
Hancock County Sheriff’s Deputy Dan Harlan said Rikki Hewes of Stonington crashed her 2004 Ford truck “right about in the middle of the bridge.”
The accident totaled the truck and Hewes suffered minor injuries, Harlan said.
The accident occurred around 8 a.m. Wednesday.
Deer Isle Fire Chief Brent Morey said the bridge was closed for 90 minutes while the accident scene was handled.
The crash occurred when a Ford pickup truck hit a patch of black ice and struck the side of the bridge, the chief said.
Fishing derby sees record turnout
DEER ISLE The annual Slim’s Fishing Derby, held the weekend of Feb. 13-14, saw a record turnout. Organizers attribute that in part to the COVID-19 pandemic, which has people looking for things to do outside.
The derby is held as a fundraiser for scholarships in memory of Jimmy “Slim” Douglass, who died in a snowmobile accident in Deer Isle in 2008. The volunteer firefighter was 26.
Organizer Jesse Larrabee said 520 people participated, which is “130 more than our biggest year.”
“It is in line with what the game wardens had mentioned,” Larrabee said. “A lot of families and kids are outdoors because there’s nowhere else to go.”
