New Delhi, Feb 02: On January 29, 2020, the Union Cabinet approved the Medical Termination of Pregnancy (Amendment) Bill, 2020, to amend the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act, 1971.
The Bill seeks to extend the termination of pregnancy period from 20 weeks to 24 weeks, making it easier for women to safely and legally terminate an unwanted pregnancy.
The bill requires further approval in the ensuing session of the Parliament to form a revised Act.
What is the need for the Amendment?
A 2015 study in the India Journal of Medical Ethics noted that 10-13 per cent of maternal deaths in India are due to unsafe abortions. This makes unsafe abortions to be the third-highest cause of maternal deaths in India.

New Delhi, Jan 29 : The Centre for Justice, Law and Society (CJLS), Jindal Global Law School has undertaken a comprehensive study of the district-wise availability and accessibility of specialist doctors (obstetrician/gynaecologists, paediatricians, and radiologists) across all Indian states and union territories, and the ramifications of the paucity of such doctors in rural, urban, and scheduled regions.
The purpose of this study was to closely analyse the shortage of specialists in the country and thereby explore the feasibility of setting up Medical Boards as proposed in the Medical Termination of Pregnancy (Amendment) Bill, 2020.

The Supreme Court on Friday constituted a medical board of seven doctors of the SSKM Hospital in Kolkata to ascertain health of a 24-week pregnant woman wanting to undergo an abortion on the grounds of the foetus abnormality.
