Brookdale Warming Center receives $35,000, gets extension on current location - 41NBC News

Listen to the content of this post: MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) The Brookdale Warming Center received $35,000 in donations Tuesday. Macon-Bibb Mayor Lester Miller says due to the generosity of the community, they haven’t had to use county funds for the center. “We’re looking forward to the day we could spend money to make more changes in people’s live but we have to come up with a long term solution,” said Mayor Miller. Southern Trust and Southern Specialty Underwriters raised $10,000. The Peyton Anderson Foundation also donated a $25,000 grant. Mayor Miller says the donations are a big help. “We were getting to the bottom of the money quite honestly,” said Mayor Miller. “Trying to cut a few corners here, needing more staff when we really couldn’t afford it. So this is very timely on their behalf.”

Local volunteer provides haircuts to residents at warming center

Angular Bonner volunteered to give haircuts to the Brookdale Warming Center residents. MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) After hearing about the Brookdale Warming Center, Angular Bonner wanted to help however she could. Bonner reached out to the center, asking for an opportunity give haircuts to the residents. Once approved, she loaded her items and products into a room feel making it look like a salon. Since there was no running warm water, the center gave her with an electric kettle to heat to water for washing hair. Bonner says she knows the importance of this to residents. “There’s a lot of stuff going on right now and people are going through psychological things and just to be able to get a good hair cut, get a clean-cut, get a hair wash, it makes the body feel good inside and out,” Bonner said.

Georgia Farm Bureau donates to the Brookdale Warming Center

Listen to the content of this post: The Georgia Farm Bureau donated $5,000 dollars to the warming at a check presentation today. MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) Brookdale Warming Center opened serving only three people. Now that number has grown to 110 people. When asked what prompted Georgia Farm Bureau to donate to the center, director of public relations Kenny Burgamy said, “The heart of the [Georgia Farm] Bureau is to give back to the community. And Macon-Bibb is where it all started, it is the home of the bureau.” After hearing about the center, Burgamy says he knew it would be a positive place because of the need.
