Farmers markets in Milwaukee area loosen some COVID rules in 2021

Most farmers markets are on their second pandemic season. They ve done this before, and they know what to expect, as much as anyone can expect anything with this now-it s-surging-now-it s-not virus, complete with loop-throwing variants.  Market shoppers this year will find some of 2020 s COVID precautions relaxed while other protocols stick around to keep market-goers and vendors safe. We want to keep a good plan going, said Jennifer Casey, the executive director of Fondy Food Center. It oversees the summer Fondy Farmers Market on Milwaukee s north side and the Winter Farmers Market at the Mitchell Park Domes on the south side, and Casey noted that no COVID-19 cases were tied to either market.

Farmers markets, Milwaukee area, open in 2021

Here come the farmers markets.  They begin May 1 with the West Allis, Brookfield, Delafield, New Berlin, Waukesha and Oconomowoc farmers markets. Then they start opening fast and furious, more than three dozen of them in and around Milwaukee. The last debuts come in July.  Not all the markets will be back yet, however. The Westown Farmers Market, for example, will be on hiatus again this year. Organizers cite reduced foot traffic downtown because of the pandemic, as many office workers continue to work from home. Expect to still find precautions taken against COVID-19, although there is some easing of rules made last year as the pandemic gained its foothold. Some markets are resuming live music, for instance, or considering resuming music later in the season.
