“I’ve never been one for restraint.”
When artist Brooke Mullin Doherty said that, she was referring to her love of the Baroque Period, with its over the top drama and emotionality in painting, architecture and music.
But her art, her philosophy on life, and her boundless enthusiasm and energy, suggests that restraint for her is almost always regulated to the back burner.
Raised as an only child in Lawton, Oklahoma by parents and extended family that encouraged creativity, Doherty didn’t visit a major gallery or art museum until she was thirteen on a visit to Dallas. Seeing an exhibition of Impressionist work opened up a whole new world for her. She wanted to start oil painting right away.
