Opinion: Home Office card blunder has left thousands nearly destitute

Opinion: Home Office card blunder has left thousands nearly destitute By Robina Qureshi Thousands of asylum seekers, including families with babies and children, are still being left without money for food, almost two weeks after the failed introduction of new pre-paid cash cards by the Home Office’s contractor PrePaid Financial Services, after it took over from Sodexo. Verity, a mother of three, is one of several hundred who asked our charity for help: “I checked there was enough money in the new card. So I and my children went to the supermarket. We got our shopping, went to pay for it and packed our bags. I gave the lady the new card. She said sorry, but its declined. she tried again and it still happened. I had to put all the shopping bags back. I felt shocked and went home. My little girl kept saying are we not getting the shopping mummy.”

Glasgow asylum seekers left without funds due to Home Office error

Activists gather at Buchanan Street to Picture: Jeff J Mitchell/Getty Images A CHARITY has warned of a “tsunami of suffering” for Glasgow’s asylum community after payment cards provided by the Home Office stopped working. It is understood the government body changed its Aspen Card contract to a new supplier - causing families and individuals to suddenly be unable to access money. Positive Action in Housing said it has been deluged by people who, overnight, were left without any funds. Charity bosses have now given out more than £11,000 in crisis payments and are providing families with food parcels to tide them over.
