The Dutch left-back, who missed a last-minute chance in the game, uploaded a screenshot of messages sent to his Instagram account which included a racial slur. “This is why we kneel,” the player wrote on Twitter, in reference to players taking the knee before kick-off in support of racial justice. He joins a growing list of Premier League players who have denounced racist abuse online in recent weeks, which includes Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial and Arsenal’s Willian, among others.
