Premier Mark McGowan has revealed a FIFO worker has tested positive for the Alpha variant of COVID-19, but remains tight lipped as to whether the state will plunge into another lockdown.
The fly-in-fly-out worker, a maintenance contractor in his 30s from Fortescue s Cloudbreak mine site, had returned a very, very weak positive test.

West Australian authorities are unsure whether the state’s latest positive COVID-19 case is shedding viral particles from a past infection, or if he contracted the disease recently from a traveller who flew from Queensland to Perth.
The fly-in, fly-out worker in his 30s returned a weak positive test for COVID-19 before testing negative, with the government confident the new case won’t lead to another lockdown in Perth.
The man flew out to FMG’s Cloudbreak mine on July 20.

In an unusual twist, the FIFO worker had previously been sick with coronavirus in March and April 2020, leading authorities to question whether he might be a “shedder”.
