JOSEPHINE CO., Ore.– Many Oregonians will be out enjoying the natural water sources this Memorial Day weekend, one local first response agency is helping you stay safe.
Rural Metro Fire in Josephine County says despite the warmer temperatures, the Rogue River is still very cold and currents can be surprisingly strong.
It says the river claims a life nearly every year.
It says in most cases, simply wearing a life jacket when on the river could change that.
It says to also be aware of the declining cell phone service along the river, which could make calling for help impossible.
MEDFORD, Ore.– Oregon school activities association says 2021 varsity seniors can still apply for a $1,000 scholarship.
According to the association 2 Moda Health Player of the Game/Athlete of the Meet Scholarships are still up for grabs.
Only two athletes from the state of Oregon are chosen all year.
You must apply by June 4th.

PORTLAND, Ore.– Ahead of memorial day weekend, a us senator spent some time Friday with veterans to discuss suicide prevention among service members.
Senator Ron Wyden was in Portland Friday for a military helpline roundtable at the Lines For Life headquarters.
Lines for life is the organization that hosts the military helpline.
The crisis prevention hotline managed over 73,000 crisis calls in 2016.
It says 30,000 of those calls were from veterans.
