Project Turnkey grant helps Center for Hope & Safety buy Salem motel

View Comments A young woman with a new baby escapes an abusive relationship and turns to the Center for Hope & Safety for emergency shelter. She is housed in a congregate setting, sharing living space and restrooms with other survivors. The Salem-based nonprofit organization connects her to resources and enrolls her in its rapid rehousing program, helping her to not just survive but thrive. The center will be able to house and help more women like her   homeless or at risk of becoming homeless due to domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking and human trafficking thanks to a $4.9 million grant and the purchase of a Salem motel.

On a recent Sunday in St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church in Brookings, Father Bernie Lindley is holding a service about charity and healing and good will. “Peter, empowered by his faith and the witness of Jesus Christ, sees this man and heals this man, and the man gets up at once and dances for joy,” Lindley says to the dozen parishioners seated throughout the small church.
