Candidate David Aguirre is the official winner of the May 1 election for Place 1 on the Pflugerville ISD board of trustees.
The school district officially canvassed the vote totals from Travis and Williamson counties on May 11, which found Aguirre won by fewer than a handful of votes against challenger Marc Garcia. In the end, Aguirre collected 2,968 total votes while Garcia collected 2,965 total votes.
“We realized in this election that every vote counts,” said Vernagene Mott, president of the PfISD board of trustees, on May 11 when the board canvassed the official results from the counties.
In the state of Texas, a candidate can legally call for a recount if the difference between the number of votes between the candidates is less than 10% of the number of votes received by the person elected. In this race, that would mean 10% of the 2,968 votes received by Aguirre so far. That comes to 296 votes far more than the gap recorded between the two candidates.
“I want to see how everything plays out. I want to make sure all the votes are counted,” Garcia said on May 6. “We’ll make that decision once we get those numbers tomorrow.”
According to information from the Texas Secretary of State Office, a candidate can legally call for a recount if the difference between the number of votes between the candidates is less than 10% of the number of votes received by the person elected.
