Exporters still adopting a wait-and-watch approach, say farmers
Auctions have resumed on a promising note in the traditional tobacco growing areas in Nellore and Prakasam districts after a 16-day break, as the intensity of COVID-19 has lessened across South Coastal Andhra Pradesh.
Anxious to liquidate the stocks on hand and fearing deterioration in the quality of the produce as and when the southwest monsoon sets in, farmers brought over 6,000 bales for sale in the 11 auction platforms in the Southern Light Soil (SLS) and Southern Black Soil (SBS) regions till Tuesday evening.

All most all crops are selling below minimum support price
Varaprasad, a tobacco farmer, has been hoping to get decent returns thanks to favourable grade out-turn obtained at his farm. But things took a bad turn as the spike in infections has led to the suspension of auctions for a fortnight as it happened last year in the traditional tobacco growing areas in Prakasam and Nellore districts.
The decision has been taken in the wake of Tobacco Board officials and hamalis contracting the viral disease, according to a grower from Mangamoor village.

They are mulling over stalling auctions if market does not bounce back by May
Farmers in the traditional tobacco growing areas in Prakasam and Nellore districts are in a quandary in view of lacklustre market conditions for the second year in a row in the wake of the second wave of COVID-19 sweeping the region.
It was a truncated marketing season for the farmers last year as the lockdown imposed to combat COVID-19 coincided with the auctions. As a result, Tobacco Board officials had a tough time arranging auctions in select auction platforms outside the containment zones.
