On May 13, when the Indian government increased the duration between two doses of the Covishield vaccine to 12 weeks-16 weeks from eight weeks-six weeks, it cited “real life evidences, particularly from UK”.
The decision, according to members of India’s Covid Working Group that recommended it, was driven by studies that suggested that the first dose of the vaccine, developed by Oxford University and the British-Swedish company AstraZeneca, provided substantial protection.

U.T. registers highest single-day toll with 34 fatalities The lockdown has been extended till May 31 in Puducherry.
Lt. Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan announced on Sunday that while there had been some success in lowering the incidence of new COVID-19 cases, following the regulations in force from May 10 to 24, the extension of the lockdown by another week was required to bring the situation under control. Only essential shops would be allowed to function from 6 a.m. till noon during the lockdown.
The night curfew will continue. Detailed guidelines would be issued shortly, the Lt. Governor added.

Authorities scramble to provide drugs to treat a fungal disease affecting India s COVID-19 patients. A fungal disease called mucormycosis is emerging among hundreds of COVID-19 patients in India, placing further strain on hospitals already at breaking point.
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said that mucormycosis, also known as black fungus, is a serious but rare infection caused by a group of moulds called mucormycetes. It usually affects the sinuses or lungs after fungal spores are inhaled from the air but can also occur on the skin after a cut or burn.
