BaylorProud » This Baylor professor is also a three-time Olympian

July 26, 2021 // Posted In Academics, Athletics Baylor’s robust Olympic history isn’t limited to a celebrated list of student-athletes who have made their alma mater proud for more than a century. There’s also at least one Baylor professor who can claim to have competed as one of the world’s best. Dr. Alex Yokochi came to Baylor in 2017 as a professor of mechanical engineering, and now teaches, mentors and conducts solar and renewable energy research. But if you had met Yokochi when he was the same age as his students, you’d very likely have found him in the swimming pool and perhaps have watched him compete on the world stage.

BaylorProud » We all fight mosquitoes — but these Baylor researchers have taken that fight to a new level

June 22, 2021 // Posted In Academics, Research Mosquitoes are a fact of life each summer, and they’re far more than an annual annoyance. Globally, they’re a leading source of the spread of diseases like Zika, West Nile Virus and malaria, claiming nearly a million lives each year. We all fight them but these four Baylor professors have taken the fight to the next level, focusing their research efforts on distinct approaches to combatting mosquitoes: Dr. Cheolho Sim, associate professor of biology, is searching for the genetic “on-and-off switch” that tells mosquitoes to prepare for dormancy in the winter. He is part of a team that recently earned a $532,000 grant from the National Science Foundation to, essentially, learn how to trick mosquitoes; the grant will support research into the genes that impact a mosquito’s circadian rhythm, seeking to find the trigger that tells a mosquito to get ready for a cold season. If they discover this, Sim says, they could “control

BaylorProud » Grant to support Baylor prof s study of American culture s impact on racial attitudes & myths

June 3, 2021 // Posted In Academics, Research Dr. Greg Garrett is particularly gifted at telling all types of stories. As a specialist in creative writing, he’s told stories of truth and passion. He’s analyzed media for its effects on past and modern societies. And over the past year, he has been focused on telling stories of race and justice. His most recent book, “Racial mythologies have been deeply embedded in American life, from film to legal codes to theology to popular and material culture,” says Garrett. “Racial mythologies about the inferiority of other races are untrue in the way we usually think of myths as lies, but they’re also powerfully true in the way that people have oriented their lives around them and used them to make sense of the world. I’m interested in the way these dynamics shapes the way we understand our lives, the world, God, and each other.”
