Bucksport’s oldest living citizen honored with Boston Post Cane
BUCKSPORT At 104 years of age, Ruth Bunt is only housebound because of the pandemic. Leaning on her walker, she opens the door to her mayor, her pastor, her town clerk and her friend, all gathered on April 19 to bestow upon Bunt the Boston Post Cane. A small-town tradition, the cane is given to honor the oldest living resident. In Bucksport, that is Bunt.
So, Town Council Chairman Peter Stewart, North Bucksport United Methodist Church Pastor Mike Morris, Town Clerk Jacob Gran and William Foster, director of the Bucksport Senior Center, crowded into Ruth’s screened-in porch to recite the proclamation that comes with the Boston Post Cane and share a few laughs.

WASHINGTON Elizabeth “Betty” Grinnell received the Boston Post Cane and certificate March 24, signifying she is the oldest resident in town at the age of 96.
Nephew and nieces along with some of their family members and her son were there to cheer her on. Selectman Wesley Daniel presented Grinnell with the cane.

As we age our thoughts are saturated with experiences sometimes good, sometimes bad and sometimes sad. We mature and age as gracefully as possible with the desire to live and love for many years into the future. With each year it is our hope that our wisdom grows along with compassion for our fellow mankind. We reflect on the past while we take notice more and more of the sunsets, lazy afternoons and the colorful foliage. Thoughts and observations that we may not have noticed when we were years younger.

PATTEN, Maine Madelyn Porter, Patten’s oldest resident, was treated to a drive-by parade in her honor as she celebrated her 100th birthday on Sunday, March 14.
Although guidelines for preventing the spread of COVID-19 were in effect, family and residents made their best efforts to mark the historic occasion. Residents passed by Porter’s home in their vehicles, some of which were decorated with balloons, and family members stayed curbside to hand out cupcakes.
