It probably doesn’t take Nancy Drew to figure out why several Brookline Prius owners have had their catalytic converters stolen recently.
Five Brookline car owners have seen their Priuses targeted within the last two months, and it might have something to do with the catalytic converters’ high concentration of palladium, among the world’s most expensive precious metals.
Catalytic converters help reduce a vehicle’s pollutant emissions. A replacement for a Prius can run about $1,500 plus labor, according to RepairPal.com.
Three cars in Brookline were targeted on Nov. 11: Two on Pleasant Street and one on Egmont Street. There were another two thefts on Newton Street, one on Dec. 3 and another Dec. 7, the TAB previously reported. Most of the callers who reported their catalytic converters stolen said the thefts happened during the night.
