A Poway Boy Scout is following in his family’s footsteps by obtaining his Eagle Award.
Spencer Wurtz, a Poway High School sophomore, recently held his Eagle Court of Honor in a private ceremony in a friend’s backyard. The 16-year-old is a member of Scouts BSA Troop 603 under Scout Master Gary Leeson.
Wurtz, the son of Jeff and Dianne Wurtz, said he is a third-generation recipient of the Eagle Award. Scouting is a family tradition, with his great-grandfather, grandfather, two uncles and older brother all earning the award. He has been in Scouting for about eight years, starting as a Cub Scout when he was 8 years old. He has earned 21 merit badges during his time in Scouting, as well as the BSA Youth Religious Knot Award.

The Poway Center for the Performing Arts will once again have patrons on its premises with two outdoor performances of “Coppélia on the Green” on Saturday, June 5.
Tickets are on sale now for the ballet, performed by the dancers of Southern California Ballet. This is a limited-capacity outdoor event with socially-distanced pod seating. There will be a matinee performance from 3 to 4:30 p.m. and an evening performance from 6 to 7:30 p.m., with a gathering for families in between. The shows will be performed outside the PCPA, 15498 Espola Road in Poway.
The Carlsbad Unified School District also received state approval and will open Tuesday to small groups, and the San Dieguito Union High School District, which had planned to open Thursday, will now open Tuesday thanks to a favorable legal judgment.
The ruling from Superior Court Judge Cynthia Freeland allows our district to implement our expanded reopening for in-person, rotating in-class instruction that begins with our one-day-a-week model immediately, SDUHSD Superintendent Robert Haley said.
Haley said school sites will communicate with students who are scheduled to report to campus Tuesday.
“It’s really great to be back,” said Baily Burk, a 10th-grader at Poway High School.
