Nicholas Bilbrey, a Firefighter III/Paramedic for the City of Winter Haven, admits that he wasn’t the greatest student when he was enrolled at Polk State College in the early 2000s. He has been successful in his 15-year career in the fire service, however, and most recently completed the Leadership Development in Public Administration (LDPA) Program at Polk State Corporate College.
Polk State’s LDPA Program was established in 2020 in partnership with the City of Winter Haven to provide quality professional development and leadership training to employees across departments and disciplines.
Bilbrey addressed the second graduating cohort in May.

BARTOW Polk County Public Schools is busy this summer, keeping up with student awards and also continuing to give out free meals to students in need.
According to the school district’s website, the district participates in the “Summer Breakspot” program, offering free meals to children while school is out.
Meals are available for all children 18 years old and under, as well as adult students in special education programs. Children do not have to be present at distribution sites to receive meals, but parents or guardians will need to show a form of ID for any child who is not there.
Dual enrollment students should work with their high school advisors and email deregistration@polk.edu for assistance if needed.
Polk State remains in Phase II of its Return to Campus Plan. When registering for classes in Passport, students should check the course descriptions for specific details about class formats and expectations.
Second-session summer classes begin June 23, and fall classes will begin Aug. 16.
