68-year-old man killed in early-morning Midfield shooting

An early-morning shooting in Midfield left one man dead.
Midfield police and fire medics responded at 1:19 a.m. Monday to a residence in the 100 block of Creel Street. The 68-year-old victim, whose name has not been released, was pronounced dead on the scene at 1:27 a.m.
Midfield Police Chief Jesse Bell detectives are still investigating the circumstances around the fatal shooting. The slain man did not live at the home where the slaying happened.
One person has been questioned by police. Once the investigation is complete, the evidence will be turned over to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office to determine whether charges will be filed.

The Midfield fire chief died unexpectedly Wednesday while he was on his lunch break.
Chief Donald Jones, 59, collapsed in the 1900 block of Ninth Avenue South in Birmingham shortly before noon.
Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service responded to the location and rushed him to the emergency room where they worked on him extensively but were unable to revive him.
Jones spent his career with Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service, rising to the rank of assistant chief. He retired in 2020 and two weeks later was hired as chief in Midfield.
20-year-old charged with capital murder in Midfield double killing

A 20-year-old is behind bars in a Midfield double shooting earlier this month that left two people dead.
Malik Rashad Fluker, of Bessemer, is charged with capital murder, murder and attempted murder in the Dec. 2 shooting that killed Ti-Teauna Antunya Riggs, 19, and Makiel Daveon Norwood, 20. Midfield Police Chief Jesse Bell on Saturday announced the arrest, and said the slain Norwood was the second suspect in the shooting that Wednesday night.
Officers responded before 8 p.m. to a report of shots fired. As officers were en route, police received another call of a vehicle in a ditch on 12th Avenue. They arrived to find Riggs unresponsive in a crashed Dodge Charger. She was pronounced dead on the scene.
