He was also instrumental in replacing the traditional umbrella cloth with synthetic materials which he sourced largely from South East Asian nations T.V.Scaria (Baby), the founder of Kerala’s popular umbrella brand Popy, died here on Monday. He was 81.
Scaria, popularly known as St George Baby, was undergoing treatment for cancer and breathed his last at a private hospital in the city.
Chairman of the Popy Group at the time of his demise, Scaria started his career at St George Umbrella Mart in Alapuzha founded by his father Thayyll Abraham Varghese also known as “Kuda Vavachan” in 1954.

A tough battle is on the cards in Irinjalakuda. A predominantly Christian belt, Irinjalakuda has stood with both the United Democratic Front and the Left Democratic Front. It had sent LDF Independent Lonappan Nambadan to the Assembly for four consecutive terms from 1982. However, UDF’s Thomas Unniyadan had won from the constituency in 2001, 2006, and 2011.

Ahead of the Kerala Assembly polls scheduled to place later this year, former Director-General of Police Jacob Thomas joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
While speaking to reporters, Thomas hit out at the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the United Democratic Front (UDF) calling them corrupt and said that he joined the BJP because he is fighting corruption. The LDF and the UDF are immersed in corruption. I have joined BJP to fight corruption, Thomas said after accepting his membership from BJP national president JP Nadda at a public meeting venue at the Thekkinkad Maidan.
