ISLAMABAD: The World Health Organisation (WHO) has announced on behalf of the Polio Eradication Initiative that the United Arab Emirates has made available $23 million funding for polio campaigns in Pakistan, which reported a 98 per cent decline in polio cases in the last six months.
Moreover, around $376,000 has been allocated for procurement of personal protective equipment for protection of frontline workers against Covid-19 in 84 highest-risk districts. The funding and donation will be utilized till Dec 2021. The funding will enable the polio programme to keep up the momentum of implementing monthly polio campaigns targeting 16 million children in the highest-risk districts of Pakistan.

As of 31 March 2021, the Ministry of Health COVID-19 reported cases in Syria have reached 18 909 including 1 265 deaths and 12 852 recoveries1 . The first confirmed case was declared on 22 March 2020 and the first death on 29 March 2020.
The “Polio Campaign” was conducted from 7-11 March targeting 2.8 million children under five years of age.
The Syrian Arab Republic is allocated 912 000 doses of the AstraZeneca AZD1222 vaccine through COVAX facility.
The health sector conducted a consultative meeting with health partners to discuss result of cluster coordination performance monitoring survey on 16 March and developed “Plan of action” to strengthen coordination functions.
Germany to provide €5m to eradicate polio

The German government through World Health Organisation will provide an additional five million euros to Pakistan for anti-polio campaigns and eradicating the crippling disease from the country.
The funds would be utilised to administer vaccines at 123 transit points setup along the border as well as for anti-polio drives across the country. On these transit points, 26.1 million children were vaccinated against the crippling disease during the first quarter of 2019-2020.
In a statement issued by WHO Country Representative to Pakistan Dr Palitha Mahipala, he expressed gratitude to the German government for the aid.
