NOAA Says Upcoming Winter In Colorado Could See The Return Of La Niña

DENVER (CBS4) – A report released Thursday from the Climate Prediction Center and the International Research Institute for Climate and Society said the upcoming winter season could feature a La Niña weather pattern for the United States. The report showed a 66 percent chance that La Niña would emerge sometime between September and November. If it develops forecasters say that it would last until the spring of 2022.
La Niña is a cooling of the surface waters in the east-central part of the Pacific Ocean near the equator. The strength of La Niña determines how it’ll influence weather patterns around the globe.

BOZEMAN â The combination of a strong Polar Jet Stream and a Pacific cold front is creating another round of wind and snow across Montana Thursday evening through Saturday morning.
A steady stream of moisture will produce areas of moderate to heavy mountain snow in Idaho and western Montana. Mountain passes have the best chance for accumulations and most lower valleys should see light amounts of snow Thursday evening through Friday evening.
Be prepared for slow-go travel conditions especially at pass level for your Friday morning and evening commutes.

BOZEMAN â Severe winter weather will impact Montana and much of the northern half of the country through next week.
A large and stationary High-pressure ridge is parked off the NW coast. This is forcing the Polar Jet Stream to lift up into northern Canada and pull Arctic air down into Montana. There is also a fair amount of moisture in the N-NW flow aloft which will produce a long duration snow event beginning Thursday night and could linger through Sunday evening.

Snow will be heavy at times especially over most mountain passes and for a few lower valleys as well and thus there are numerous Watches, Warnings, and Advisories up across the state.
