20th Anniversary of Solway Harvester Sinking Marked

Fishing communities on both sides of the Irish Sea have marked the 20th anniversary of the sinking of a scallop dredger with the loss of seven lives off the Isle of Man.
The Celtic League non-governmental organisation has also marked the deaths of skipper Andrew Mills (known as Craig), (29), his brother Robin Mills (33), their cousin David Mills (17), Martin Milligan (26), John Murphy (22), David Lyons (18) and Wesley Jolly (17).
All seven men died when their dredger was caught in a storm off the Scottish coast on January 11th, 2000.

The Southern Delivery Office in Ronaldsway Industrial Estate will temporarily return to provide customers with a parcel collection facility.
The facility will operate from Monday, January 4, with scheduled opening hours on Monday to Friday from 7.30am to 2.30pm and on Saturdays from 10am to 1pm.
Alternative parcel collection sites are also available in Ballasalla, Port St Mary and Port Erin.
The general manager leading the mails divisional strategy for the Post Office, Geoff Rickard, said: ’We have seen huge growth in our parcel volumes this year and are keen to work with as many partners as possible to provide a parcel collection site for our customers. We are looking for applicants island-wide but in particular for Castletown and surrounding areas. Events are being held in several places around the Isle of Man including in Peel, Douglas, Port St Mary, Port Erin, Ramsey, Castletown and Laxey. The organisers of the Douglas and Ramsey dips are encouraging people to sign-up to take the plunge and raise some money for charity. The Douglas event starts at 12pm and is aid of Breast Cancer Now. Four beaches will become designated bathing waters next summer as the island introduces Europe’s highest water quality standards.
In December 2019, Tynwald agreed a strategy for the adoption of the 2006 EU Bathing Water Directive, having already agreed the previous 1976 directive was ’inadequate’.
Following the decision local authorities were consulted before being invited to apply for their beaches to be designated.
The government received eight applications, of which four were approved for the next bathing season which begins on May 1.
