  PORT MORIEN, N.S. Port Morien Fire Chief James Bates is sounding the alarm on a purposed idea to close four rural fire departments in the CBRM in favour of one central facility. One of the services we provide is the medical first response service, so with an aging population seconds count. It s not a matter of minutes or anything else, it s seconds, says Bates. Chief Bates says at a meeting Wednesday night with Regional Fire Services, the idea was presented to amalgamate Donkin, Birch Grove, Tower Road and Port Morien departments and building one station to services all of the communities.

Jeff Mackinnon says he was supposed to fly home to Halifax this week to see his six-year-old son, however, he ll now be staying in Fort McMurray, Alta. He asked me, Daddy is 14 days up yet? I said, Yeah buddy, today is supposed to be my day to come home, said MacKinnon. “He said, How much longer? I told him, I don t know. Fish fun becomes accessible thanks to volunteers in Cape Breton

(Submitted by Jeff McNeil ) comments The new walkway and fishing stations at Cape Breton s John Bernard Croak Memorial Park might look like a simple collection of asphalt and concrete to a passerby. But they are actually a sign of equality and accessibility built from the ground up by volunteers.  The Glace Bay park is where children take part in a program that releases trout into the lake and helps the children learn how to fish. But the ground leading to the lake was rough and uneven, making it hard for children who use wheelchairs to get to the water s edge.

I was horrified : Cape Breton community fed up with illegal dumping at local cemetery

  HALIFAX Frustration is growing among residents of Port Morien, N.S. who say illegal dumping continues to occur at the resting place for many of their ancestors. I was horrified. This is a sacred space for our community, said Beverly Spencer, a resident of Port Morien. There are literally generations of people from this area buried here.   Spencer has family members of her own resting in Black Brook Cemetery. She says the community has a memorial service every summer with many people coming from away to partake. So, it s not just a place where you occasionally come, said Spencer. It has special meaning for so many people.
